MARC AVREL, laureate and draped bust right // Seminude Victory, holding reins and wreath, driving triga left; VICTRIX CAVSA / DIIS PLACET (the victorious cause pleases the gods, —adapted from Lucan's Pharsalia I) in two lines in exergue. Edge: Plain.
Bernd Kaiser V, –; Heidemann –; Layh 237b. Choice Mint State. Tan-brown surfaces, with a charming matte nature. A scarce and intriguing ancient-inspired issue.
The quote "The victorious cause pleases the gods" is a variant of the proverbial saying by Lucan, Pharsalia I 128: "victrix causa deis placuit, sed victa Catoni" (the victorious cause pleased the gods, but the defeated Cato).
