    INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, Liberty standing facing, head slightly right, holding wreath in each hand; to left, allegories representing Agriculture and Industry; to right, Art and Commerce; PHILADELPHIA 1876 in exergue // FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE, FIRST IN THE HEARTS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN, central medallion containing bust of Washington left and supported from below by facing eagle with wings spread; cherub to left and right, each holding palm frond and holding ring of thirteen stars between them. Edge: Plain.

     

    Baker 426; Rulau/Fuld 426B; Musante GW-932. Choice Mint State. Glossy red-brown surfaces, with intense brilliance among the fields; a few minor spots of green are noted for completeness.

     

    The Centennial International Exposition of 1876 had the distinction of being the first such expo to take place within the United States, all while being held during the nation's 100th anniversary of independence. Nearly 10 million visitors viewed such novel inventions as the typewriter, the sewing machine, and the telephone.
