103376  |  BELGIUM. World War II Art Deco bronze Medal. Issued 1945. Belgium is Grateful to the Liberating Armies (80mm, 188.92 g, 12h). By Marcel Rau for Fiche Fonson.

Personifications of the Rivers Scaldis (Scheldt), holding anchor and grain ears, and Mosa (Meuse), holding sledgehammer and wheel, standing facing one another on pedestals decorated with civic coats-of-arms; in background, rising sun between implements of industry and commerce // 1944-45 / GRATEFUL BELGIUM TO / THE LIBERATING ARMIES in three lines; crowned coat-of-arms to left; above, relief map of Belgium with various cities engaged during the war outlined. Edge: FISCH & Cie.

Silich III, 1148 (this medal). Mint State Details. Highly appealing tan-brown surfaces, with an enchanting matte nature mostly throughout; a minor break to this aspect in the form of a small "HI," seemingly intential in graphite, is noted in the field near the waist of Scaldis, and accounts for this designation; wholly resounding otherwise.

Ex David Nicholas Silich Collection, Part III (Noonans 331, 14 October 2025), lot 1148.

After being occupied by German forces for four years toward the end of World War II, Belgium finally found freedom in the form of allied forces consisting of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Poland, and the Netherlands. This medal celebrates the countries which offered aid and shows the gratitude felt by Belgium following her liberation.
