Often referred to as "the Great One," Roberto Clemente was one of baseball's pioneering Latin American stars, being the first from Latin America and the Caribbean region to win a World Series as a position player, receive an NL MVP, and earn a World Series MVP. A threat both offensively and defensively, he garnered 15 All-Star selections, was a four-time NL batting champion, and a twelve-time Gold Glove winner, receiving the fielding award each year from 1861 until his final season in 1972. In his last regular season at bat of '72, he hit a double, garnering him his 3,000th career hit.

During the ensuing off season, he was greatly involved in charity work in Puerto Rico and, following a massive earthquake in Nicaragua just before Christmas, became focused upon directing aid to the victims. After three initial aid packages were intercepted by Nicaragua's strong man government, Clemente decided to fly personally with the fourth in order to ensure its intended delivery. However, the plane which he chartered crashed soon after take off, killing all those aboard, with Clemente's remains never to be recovered. Baseball's Hall of Fame quickly changed its rules, allowing those recently-deceased to be eligible for induction, bypassing the normal five-year absence from the game. He was inducted via special election in the following year's class of 1973.
