103429  |  ITALY. Padova. Nicolo da Carrara cast bronze Medal. Dated 1326, though likely a 17th-18th century cast from a mid-16th century original (68mm, 182.52 g, 10h). After an uncertain artist.

 

NICOLAVS DE CARRARIA • II • TERRITORII PAT • D • AN • MCCCXXIIII •, bust left, wearing cloth head dress // • OBIIT ANNO DO • • MCCCXXVI •, coat-of-arms surmounted by draped helmet and topped by crescent and flowers. Edge: Some minor filing marks as made, otherwise plain.

 

Hill 1247. Choice Extremely Fine. A very attractive later cast from an original, featuring even brown surfaces and exceptional relief—especially upon the reverse. Compare to a similar specimen—also a later casting from an original, though slightly earlier than this piece—which realized a total of $720 (after the buyer's fee) in CNG E-563, lot 1130.
