The father of modern taxonomy, Carl von Linné was a Swedish biologist and physician who formalized binomial nomenclature—essentially the modern system of naming organisms. This medal was commissioned for the 250th anniversary of his birth, with the design here serving as the basis for a smaller, more recent medal issued in 2007.
