103486 | GERMANY. Martin Luther bronze Medal. Issued 1817 for the 300th anniversary of the Reformation (42mm, 12h). By Anton Friedrich König for the Loos workshop in Berlin.
DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER / GEB. D. 10 NOV. 1483 GEST. D. 18 FEBR. 1546, cloaked bust facing, raising finger and pointing with other hand to open Bible // DIE SAAT WIRD AUSGESTREUT UND GOTT GAB DAS GEDEIHEN, Luther standing right, nailing his Ninety-Five Theses upon the doors of Wittenberg Cathedral; in four lines in exergue, DRITTES IUBELFEST / DER REFORMATION / AM 31 OCTOBER / 1817.
Cf. Whiting 580 (silver); cf. Opitz 3119a (same); Brozatus 1200; Sommer A-203; cf. Belli Coll. 2088 (same). PCGS MS-64. Rich chocolate brown in hue, with exceptional brilliance radiating throughout. The only such example of the type in the PCGS census, and finer by a single point than the one example seen there in silver—an example that we sold in 2024. In fact, while this type can be found with some frequency in silver, it appears to be extremely rare in the present bronze format.
An individual celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, Martin Luther is the focus of this engaging medal, featuring his facing bust on one side and his monumental act on the other—that of nailing his Ninety-Five Theses to doors of Wittenberg Cathedral in 1517.
