103490  |  UNITED STATES & GERMANY. Martin Luther white metal Medal. Issued 1883 for the American Lutheran Church and the 400th anniversary of the birth of Luther (43mm, 12h). By Rudolph Laubenheimer for Ludwig Christian Lauer in Nürnberg.

ZUR FEIER DES 400 JÄHRIGEN GEBURTSTAGES LUTHER'S IN DER AMERIKn LUTHn KIRCHE / MARTIN LUTHER / GEB. DEN 10 NOV. 1483, robed bust right (modeled after Alexis Joseph Depaulis's rendition) // JETZT BRATET IHR EINE GANS NACH HUNDERT JAHREN KOMMT EIN SCHWAN DEN WERDET IHR UNGEBRATEN LAN (now you are roasting a goose, but in a hundred years a swan will come—and him, you will leave unroasted), Jan Hus facing left, tied to a stake and being burned.

Whiting –; Opitz –; Brozatus –; Zak 303-4. PCGS MS-64. A fairly rare and seldom encountered Luther type with an American-connection that has eluded most of the more advanced collections of the subject.

Celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, along with other related anniversaries, Martin Luther was also celebrated in 1883 on account of the 400th anniversary of his birth. This piece also features, upon its reverse, Jan Hus, a seminal figure in the Bohemian Reformation and a theologian who inspired reforms that preceded Luther by a century. Despite this medal's German origins from the Lauer mint, it also references the Lutheran Church in America.
