103525  |  SWEDEN. Alfred Nobel gilt silver Award Medal. Issued 1987 for participation on the nominating committee for the prize in economics (26mm, 12h). By Gunvor Gerda Maria Svensson-Lundkvist.

SVERIGES RIKSBANK TILL ALFRED NOBELS MINNE 1968, bare head left; crossed cornucopias below // KUNGLIGA VETENSKAPSAKADEMIEN, radiant star between crown and three smaller crowns.

Lagerqvist 6a. PCGS SP-64. Lightly toned, with some slightly darker, more burnished areas nearer the edges.

Not a part of the original Nobel series of awards, the prize in economics, officially referred to as "Economic Sciences," was established in 1968, with it first being awarded the following year in 1969. Its establishment in 1968 was meant to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Swedish Riksbank (literally, the bank of the kingdom). Serving as the sponsor of the economics prize, the Riksbank stands as the oldest central bank in the world, and the fourth oldest bank overall—behind only the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena in Firenze (Florence, Italy), Berenberg Bank (in Hamburg, Germany), and Child & Co. (in London, England).

Though actual prize medals are almost never encountered in the market, the nominating medals do appear and have become quite popular, as they are generally as close as one can realistically get to an actual prize medal—even if you are a president who claims to have ended 7 wars, or 10 wars, or claims to have ended the war in Iran for the fourth week in row.
