103562  |  GERMANY & GREAT BRITAIN. "We Sail against England" zinc Medal. Issued 1940 on the intended bombing campaign by Nazi Germany against England (36mm, 12h). By Karl Goetz in München.

26 MAI, Englishman seated right, with back facing, on outline of Great Britain; masts of sunken ships emerging from the waters around; to lower right, outline of French coast, marked CALAIS and with Nazi flag billowing // WIR FAH REN GEGEN ENGELLAND (we sail against England), German ship, with imperial eagle at its prow, under sail left; above, warplanes flying left.

Kienast 573. NGC MS-63. Gunmetal gray surfaces, with a charming matte nature. A fairly scarce type that becomes even more difficult in an elevated state of preservation, as is the case here.

Following the fall of France, which Goetz alluded to here by the depiction of the Nazi flag at Calais, it became clear that Hitler's focus would then fall to the British Isles as the next logical conquest. An aerial bombing campaign would ensue and, if this proved unsuccessful, an invasion by sea would take it place. Though with dwindling allied support on the continent, England would find a new ally in the United States the following year, with the latter helping to turn the tide against the increasingly overextended German war machine.
